In a stunning victory on Tuesday, progressive candidate Ayanna Pressley defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Mike Capuano in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District Democratic primary. Pressley, 44, received 58.9 percent of the vote to Capuano’s 41.1 percent.
Pressley’s victory can be attributed to the grassroots movement within the Democratic Party and a generational, gender and racial shift within Boston politics.

Capuano advertised heavily, raising nearly twice as many campaign dollars as Pressley, who herself rejected corporate-PAC money.
Pressley previously made history as the first African-American woman elected to the Boston City Council.
Without a Republican in the race, Pressley is set to become the first woman of color from Massachusetts to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
