It’s no secret that historically, law enforcement’s main focus when it comes to domestic terrorist violence is fixated on right-wing groups; but an anti-fascist group called “antifa” has begun to raise some eyebrows, along with plenty of questions.
The left-wing extremist group is becoming more confrontational and dangerous; showing up to rallies and events ready and willing to fight for their cause. Antifa, with its sights set on right-wing white supremacists and nationalist groups, has been caught on video in violent scenarios — violent enough to be formally classified as “domestic terrorist acts” by the Department of Homeland Security.
“These antifa guys are showing up with weapons, shields, and bike helmets and just beating the shit out of people,” one senior law enforcement official tracking domestic extremists says.
The footage of antifa’s violence swarming the internet, according to the group’s own supporters, are described as part of the necessary fight in ending white supremacy.
Antifa’s website describes themselves as a revolutionary abolitionist movement, and features an eloquently written section about a particular set of events that took place in Charlottesville, Va., over the summer.
“In a beautiful display of courage and resistance, hundreds of anti-fascists stood up in Charlottesville this weekend to prevent the unification of multiple white nationalists groups and combat the lynch mob terror that they intended to unleash,” antifa’s website reads.
Trump, who earlier faced a multitude of political backlashings after waiting two days to specifically mention racist organizations including the Klu Klux Klan and Neo-Nazis, recently issued a statement saying he was pleased to sign a legislation condemning the Charlottesville violence and associated hate groups.
“As Americans, we condemn the recent violence in Charlottesville and oppose hatred, bigotry, and racism in all forms,” Trump stated.
Law enforcement seems to stand at a slight disadvantage in this growing race war and are having a difficult time getting a handle on things.
“Both the racists and a segment of violent antifa counter-protesters are amped for battle in an escalating arms race where police departments are outmaneuvered,” says former New York City police officer Brian Levin.
As the extremist groups on both sides seem to be forming and growing each day, we can’t help but wonder when this “eye for an eye” battle will end, or if it will just end up leaving the whole world blind.
