Eagerness over seeing the Clinton Foundation and, by extension, Bill and Hillary Clinton’s reputation further besmirched approaching the Nov. 8 election may have gotten the best of Fox News host Bret Baier, who in a report stated an indictment was “likely” against the family charity.
“That just wasn’t inartful, it was a mistake, and for that I’m sorry. I should have said they will continue to build their case,” Baier told fellow host Jon Scott on Fox’s “Happening Now.”
Initially reporting on Nov. 2, Baier described a year-long investigation into the Foundation as “likely” yielding an indictment when discussing the FBI inquiry of the charity with Fox News On the Record host, Brit Hume.
Seizing Baier’s words, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump eviscerated Clinton and described her tenure at the State Department as “pay to play.”
When faced with a cascade of criticism from rival networks and after drawing a rebuke from the Clinton campaign, Baier retracted his words on Friday morning.
Asked for a comment on Baier’s reporting and reversal, Fox News officials alluded to television journalist’s on-air retraction and apology.
