Roger Ailes role in Trump campaign proves difficult to admit

Amid reports former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes is assisting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump prepare for the first debate against Hillary Clinton on September 26, the Trump campaign issued a statement Tuesday denying the rumor that Ailes is in anyway involved in helping the New York real estate mogul get elected.

“He is not advising Mr. Trump or helping with debate prep. They are longtime friends but he has no formal or informal role in the campaign,” read a statement from the Trump campaign.

The veteran media consultant served as an adviser to presidents Nixon, Reagan and Bush.

Ousted as head of Fox News, a role he held for two decades, Ailes faces a sexual harassment lawsuit, filed by former host, Gretchen Carlson.  Carlson’s suit alleges Ailes dismissed her for refusing his advances. Two weeks following Carlson’s lawsuit, Ailes stepped down as Fox chairman.

Since Carlson came forward with her story, over a dozen women have contacted the former Fox News host’s attorney in New Jersey with similar sexual harassment allegations — six of whom told their personal stories to New York Magazine in July.

The accusations against Ailes date back to the mid-1960s, when he worked as a television show producer.
