Trump endorses Paul Ryan in primary against businessman challenger

A tumultuous week for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, which began with a refusal to endorse Rep. Paul Ryan’s bid for re-election, ended Friday evening at a Green Bay, Wisconsin, rally with Trump embracing the House Speaker.

On Monday, Trump stated he was “not quite there” when asked if he was willing to back Ryan’s bid to return to the House, running against fervent Trump advocate and businessman Paul Nehlen.

Mr. Trump also endorsed two Republican senators he previously declined to support, New Hampshire’s Kelly Ayotte and Arizona’s John McCain.

“I need a Republican Senate and a House to accomplish all of the changes that we have to make.” Trump said.

In endorsing the vulnerable Granite State senator, Trump called Ayotte a “rising star.”  Ayotte trails Democratic challenger, Maggie Hassan, by as many as ten percentage points in recent polls.

Trump’s refusal to initially endorse Republican congressional candidates running for re-election roiled many GOP insiders and prompted some to openly discuss whether the Trump campaign was on task and running a serious operation.
