Delta Co., Colorado, Republican chairwoman Linda Sorenson resigned her post as the county’s party leader Friday, after posting a racially suggestive meme on her Facebook page in May which was captured by a local media outlet.
The image features Ronald Reagan in the 1951 film Bedtime for Bonzo bottle-feeding a chimpanzee, with the caption: “I’ll be damned . . . Reagan used to babysit Obama!”
Initially, Sorenson claimed her Facebook page was hacked after the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance called for her resignation.
Shortly after the news of Sorenson’s Facebook post became public, the Delta Co., GOP chair broke state party rules by endorsing a candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, making her the subject of numerous “accountability meetings” during the month of June.
Finally, after the fourth such meeting on Thursday, Sorenson sent a mass email to county party officials announcing her resignation.
“There’s no room for racism, intended or unintended, in society,” said former Delta Co., Republican Party chairman Don Suppes. “It’s best for the party, best for the county, that she step down.”
Sorenson gave a half-hearted apology in June, after giving up on her excuse that the Reagan picture was posted by a hacker, issuing a statement that lamented being the target of “the ‘gotcha’ game” and accusing “the left” of “only [being] about tolerance when they’re demanding YOU [sic] tolerate their latest nutty idea”.
When the media first picked up on the meme story, Sorenson told a local reporter, “I don’t really care if people are offended by it.”
Colorado Republicans should be relieved they don’t have to deal with a half-wit like Linda Sorenson anymore.
