Gov. Chris Christie received a torrent of criticism this week for his endorsement of Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy and what some perceive as hubris toward his supporters and the people of New Jersey.
On Monday, he held a press conference to announce his nomination of a judge to the State Supreme Court. During the press conference, Christie refused to answer questions not related to the nomination. This spurred a joint editorial from six Gannett-owned publications in New Jersey, who wrote the following:
“We’re fed up with Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance. We’re fed up with his opportunism. We’re fed up with his hypocrisy.”
The editorial went on to note that Christie spent 261 days out of the state in the past year, including a trip to campaign with Donald Trump.
In a separate development, the New Hampshire Union Leader retracted their endorsement of Gov. Christie for the GOP nomination citing his support for Trump after frequent statements criticizing him while conducting his campaign.
Christie has spawned a Twitter hashtag, #FreeChrisChristie, been lampooned on The Tonight Show by Jimmy Fallon and other media outlets, and experienced a precipitous decline in his approval ratings.
The Tonight Show sketch featured a cardboard cutout of Christie who was unceremoniously ushered off stage after Fallon’s impersonation of Donald Trump.
Christie may be happy it’s Friday.
