An Oregon grand jury has handed down indictments on 16 militiamen stemming from the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon on January 2.
Arrested January 26 were Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy, Ryan Payne, Brian Cavalier, Shawna Cox, Joseph O’Shaughnessy, Pete Santilli, Jason Patrick, Duane Ehmer, Dylan Anderson, and Jon Ritzheimer.
Defendants are to be arraigned on February 24.
All 11 have been charged with felony conspiracy and using intimidation to prevent federal authorities from entering the refuge.
Four additional indicted militiamen remain holed up inside a building inside the wildlife refuge.
In an unusual twist, U.S. Magistrate Judge Janice Stewart cancelled a preliminary hearing, a standard procedure where defense attorneys exercise their clients’ right to cross examine arresting officers, and ruled to keep the indictments sealed.
Speaking from his cell in the Multnomah County Jail, militia leader Ammon Bundy remained defiant and lashed out at FBI agents and Oregon police who killed Robert Finicum in the roadside confrontation on January 26 which led to their arrest.
“Go home, Oregon State Police, you have already killed enough” and “Go home, FBI, it is time to end this,” Bundy is heard to say in the audio recording.
The remaining holdouts inside the wildlife refuge have stated they will remain until given the guarantee of not being charged for their activity.
