House votes to defund Planned Parenthood for a year

On Friday the Republican controlled House passed a bill that would defund Planned Parenthood for one-year.

The Republican leadership pushed the bill through hoping that an attack against abortion would bring the party’s stalwarts in line and avoid a government shutdown.

The fight to defund Planned Parenthood arose after heavily edited videos released by the Center for Medical Progress allegedly showed Planned Parenthood officials talking about the amount that fetal tissue is sold for.

Much of the allegations in the videos have been proven false.

Planned Parenthood does not sell fetal tissue for profit.

Planned Parenthood cannot sell fetal tissue without the express permission of the donor.

Only 3 percent of all Planned Parenthood’s 2.7 million annual patients receive abortions.

Finally, no federal funding at Planned Parenthood is used for abortions.

This has not stopped those on the Right from making wild allegations however.

As recently as this week Republican Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina asserted that ghoulish activities were a regular occurrences at Planned Parenthood.

“As regards Planned Parenthood,” she said, “anyone who has watched this videotape, I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.”

This however, is entirely untrue. The Center for Medical Progress videos have been conclusively proven to be heavily edited misrepresentations.

Sarah Kliff at Vox has watched every Center for Medical Progress video and has created a handy guide for what was really said, and what The Center for Medical Progress edited to say what they wanted it to.

While the passage of this bill is a win for those who do not want to see a government shutdown, it is a huge loss for Planned Parenthood’s 2.7 million annual patients who’s lives have been save with free breast exams, contraception, STD treatment, and sex-education.

  1. Bill

A top Republican said an investigation of Planned Parenthood was intended to protect taxpayers from the kind of “horrors” suggested by secretly recorded videos of group officials discussing the sale of tissue from aborted fetuses.
However, he forgot to mention the fact that the Department of Health and Human Services approved the use of “fetal tissue” for medical research.
“fetal tissue continues to be a critical resource for important efforts such as research on degenerative eye disease, human development disorders such as Down syndrome, and infectious diseases, among a host of other diseases.”

I wonder if he believes that the use of tissue from aborted fetuses which was approved by the Department of Health and Human Services constitutes the same type of “horrors” suggested in the secretly recorded videos by the group officials which discussed the sale of tissue from aborted fetuses.

More importantly, I wonder if he believes that it is ok to use tissue from aborted fetuses for research purposes “seeing how it was approved by congress”
