Kevin Downing, a former Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employee, shot and killed Idrissa Camara, a security guard at point-blank range in the lobby of the New York Federal Building.
Moments later Downing turned the gun on himself.
Downing was distraught over being dismissed for revealing wasteful spending practices.
Authorities allege that Downing entered the building at the West Houston Street entrance, approached Camara at the security post he was manning, immediately pointed his .38 caliber revolver and fired.
The federal building was immediately placed on lockdown.
“It looks like he would shoot whoever was standing there,” the source said. “Somebody had just gone through the checkpoint and was gathering his stuff. The guard turns to greet (Downing) and he shoots. There doesn’t appear to be any interaction between the two.”
According to New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Department James O’Neill, the gunman shot Camara, proceeded through the security checkpoint and walked toward the elevators.
“He proceeded through the security area and headed towards the elevator, where he encountered another employee,” O’Neill said. “At this point, the suspect shot himself in the head.”
The victim, Idrissa Camara, a 53-year-old father of four, died on his way the hospital.
