Tuesday, President Barack Obama signed a bill that would create a national police alert system for those who have harmed, killed or threatened police officers.
The system is described as being similar to the Amber Alert system for missing and kidnapped children.
The new alert system, referred to as a “blue” alert, was created in response to the deaths of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Weijan Liu who were killed by Ismaaiyl Brinsley.
Brinsley attacked the two officers while they were on patrol at random because of their uniforms.
One of the sponsors of the measure was Representative Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), cited the importance of quick dissemination of important information in cases involving attacks on police officers.
“The grave risk that our law enforcement officers face was tragically confirmed this past Christmas when on-duty New York Police Department Officers Ramos and Liu were murdered while simply sitting in their squad car,” Pascrell said. “When threats like this occur, the rapid dissemination of critical, time-sensitive information is essential, and the national blue alert system would provide that in New Jersey and across our nation.”
