Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) is in hot water after making a Native American ‘war cry’ gesture.
Sanchez made the gesture when describing how she thought she was meeting with a Native American leader, when in fact she was meeting with an Indian American leader.
When asked about her actions, Sanchez explained her thinking behind what she had done.
She told the Bee: What I said was that I got a call from somebody from over the phone and he said I want to talk to you about having help from the Indian community, and I thought he meant the American Indian community, in the sense of the Native American Indian community.
I am curious as to when somebody on her staff is going to tell her to stop calling Native Americans “Indian.” They are not Indians, and don’t want to be called Indians. Indians are Indians, because they are from India. Native Americans are Native Americans, because they were in America before European settlers.
Her senate race is off to a very racist start. That’s not good when running in California.
