We all knew the Bruce Jenner 20/20 interview was going on, but I didn’t think The Hill Talk would have anything to talk about in regards to it. But politics did come up, and Bruce told Diane Sawyer that he is a Republican. Because I am normal, I was surprised.
The conversation about his political stance began when Sawyer asked him his thoughts about Barack Obama becoming the first president to use the word “transgender” in his 2015 State of the Union.
“Did you cheer the president?” Sawyer asked Jenner.
“I will certainly give him credit for that,” Jenner responded. “But not to get political, I’ve just never been a big fan. I’m kind of more on the conservative side.”
“Are you Republican?” Sawyer asked.
“Yeah,” he said with a smile. “Is that a bad thing? I believe in the Constitution.”
I bet a Democrat comes along and tells me I’m ignorant to assume he’s liberal because he is transgender, but you assumed it too. Bruce also told Diane he thinks Boehner and McConnell would be receptive to him if they wanted to discuss LGBT issues.
Jenner also said he would go to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to help promote the LGBT cause.
“In a heartbeat, why not?” He told Sawyer. “And I think they’d be very receptive to it.”
The GOP should take advantage of that offer. A little rebranding towards the LGBT community could go a long way in 2016. We know they need it.
