In an aggressive video uploaded on Twitter, Boko Haram master, Abubakar Sheaku, delivers an address proclaiming the group’s faithfulness to ISIS, the devotion to the establishment of a caliphate and calls on the Muslim world to join their crusade. Despite Twitter discontinuing accounts identified as associated with Boko Haram, this video has not yet been authenticated.
The video was released in concomitance with an alarming string of bombings in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri, once a Boko Haram stronghold, which claimed over fifty lives. Although Boko Haram has not yet claimed responsibility for the terror attacks, it is doubtful the attacks were staged by another group considering Boko Haram’s activity in the area and their attempts to retake the city from the Nigerian Army. In the past several months, the Nigerian Army has successfully driven the terror group from a succession of strongholds; however, as Boko Haram retreated and abandoned garrisons in Nigeria, they expanded attacks into neighboring Cameroon.
This Guardian video gives a brief chronological outline of the rise, the murky world and the unimaginable cruelty of Boko Haram.
