The Somali-based terror group, Al Shabaab, released a video which urges terror enthusiasts to attack shopping malls in the West. Among the targets: Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, West Edmonton Mall in Canada and Oxford Street in London; all three alleged targets are bustling shopping venues in large metropolitan areas.
In addition to calls for terror attacks on the West, the six-minute video reveals footage of terrorists observing the 2013 assault on a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, which left sixty people dead. Within the confines of the video is the chilling image of Minnesota’s Mall of America, which the video’s relater names as a prospective target. The video then proceeds to show a hooded man with a British accent who expresses outrage at alleged crimes committed by Kenyan troops against Somali Muslims. As the video draws to a conclusion, the storyteller appeals to members of Islam supporting Jihadi causes to assault Western marketplaces.
Mall of America immediately addressed the claims in the video and stated: “We will continue to monitor events with the help of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. As always, we take any potential threat seriously and respond appropriately.”
Although this recent video may have questionable origins, Mall of America responded sensibly by adding security, taking further steps to prepare for any terror attack and not disregarding this prescient warning as the handiwork of a one-man wrecking ball. Other than the validity of similar videos, which reveal the aftermath of gruesome beheadings, this latest menacing video, calling for attacks on the West, should be treated as a genuine threat from a determined and most unrelenting enemy.
