In an unprecedented public relations move, Apple announced on Tuesday that it will be financing a $850 million solar energy project.
All in all, the sun farm will sit on 2900 acres south of San Francisco and will produce up to 280 megawatts of electricity. The plan is for Apple to power its entire California operations, including corporate headquarters, offices, and stores, using 130 mega-watts produced by the plant, and sell the rest of the power to a northern California utility company.
First Solar Inc., an Arizona-based manufacturing company that builds solar equipment, will begin construction later this year with a targeted completion date of late 2016.
Apple is the most valuable company in the United States with a market share of well over $700 billion.
